The hometown stop at Arizona Financial Theatre paired breathtaking musicianship with a theatrical production inspired by growth and storytelling.
Lindsey Stirling brought her “Duality Untamed” tour back to her hometown of Phoenix for an unforgettable night of top-tier violin playing, perfectly polished dancing, and outstanding aerial. Going into the evening, I had no idea what to expect from Stirling. Knowing her violin playing is world-renowned, I knew I was in for a treat, but what was presented to the audience was beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.
The evening began with two incredible opening acts, ARKAI and PVRIS. The electroacoustic duo began with an intensely emotional performance of the electric violin and cello duo ARKAI, in which they shared deeply personal stories of their music before each and every moving performance.
Following the duo was American pop-rock band PVRIS, and the audience began to fill up rapidly as they brought their electronic/synth pop anthems to the stage. Fun colors and strong vocals made this performance unforgettable while getting the audience excited for Lindsey’s long-awaited set.
As Stirling took the stage performing her first song, a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir,” a beautiful stained glass backdrop appeared behind her, filling the stage, turning the Arizona Financial Theatre into a fairytale castle. Immediately breaking into dance, the audience was on the edge of their seats, completely immersing themselves in the concert.
Something that makes Stirling’s performance even more impressive is the incredible energy that refused to die through the entire 90-minute performance. With powerful kicks, jumps & spins, the smiles on Lindsey and her dancers' faces were undeniable, and you can truly tell they love what they do.
As the night went on and more fan favorites were performed, the performances got even more impressive as aerial was incorporated into the storytelling. On both hoops and silks, Stirling and her dancers used not just the music, but their bodies and skill to move the story along. Most impressive were moments in which the violinist herself was performing on these apparatuses while simultaneously performing live instrumentals. The passion and skill it takes to put on a performance as strong and mesmerizing as this one are immense and truly make this a show you do not want to miss.
Towards the last act of the evening, Stirling began sharing deep and personal stories and moments with the audience to help us better understand the story being told throughout the evening. She shared that her father was a teacher in Arizona and that his way of storytelling had inspired the theme of the tour. The show’s premise was deep but simple: she called it “the power of the pause.”
Every element of the show tied together to tell the story of a butterfly and its metamorphosis into a new stage of life and how this can apply to every member in the audience. Discussing how growth isn’t linear, and life may feel stagnant sometimes, but that even in these moments, when we pause and feel we aren’t doing enough, are truthfully the most powerful. She shared her perspective on these times and how she believes these are the strongest periods of growth within our lives, goals, and careers and the power that is held within that.
Rounding out the evening before jumping into a captivating performance of her song “Eye of the Untold Her” with the lead singer of PVRIS was a beautiful speech in which she hoped to leave the audience with a few final words. “I hope when you leave here you feel like you can do anything…not only are you the hero of your own story, you’re also the author.” Reminding the audience that the dreams we have are our dreams for a reason and we are meant to have them.
The Duality Untamed tour is not just a beautiful violin performance with a few visuals here and there; it is an experience, a story. From beginning to end in every detail, the audience was able to connect with Stirling and her story, with many of us walking out of the room not only fulfilled by the extraordinary musicality and visual performance we had just witnessed but also inspired to continue growing and following our dreams as we go through our internal metamorphosis into the person we dream to be.
