Behind the relentless riffs and swirling mosh pits, Marquee Theatre revealed the sense of community that has long defined metal's live culture.
Progressive metal band Jinjer brought their first North American headline tour since 2024 to a sold-out Marquee Theatre. Support came from Entheos and Crystal Lake, who helped set the tone for the evening before the Ukrainian metal group took the stage.
As someone attending their first metal show, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The night started off fairly calm, but after a few songs the energy in the room quickly picked up. Mosh pits formed, crowd surfers made their way to the front, and fans packed shoulder to shoulder, filling the sold-out venue. Despite the intensity, there was a strong sense of community among those in attendance. Fans also waved Ukrainian flags throughout the night in support of the band and their home country, creating memorable moments both on and off the stage.
Entheos opened the evening with a high-energy set that immediately got the crowd engaged, while Crystal Lake kept that momentum going with an equally intense performance. The show also marked Crystal Lake’s first performance with new vocalist Wade Walters, making the night a notable one for longtime fans of the band. By the time Jinjer took the stage, the audience was fully energized and ready for the headlining set.
On stage, Jinjer delivered a performance that balanced technical musicianship with raw energy. Vocalist Tatiana Shmayluk moved effortlessly between melodic singing and harsh vocals while also bringing plenty of personality to the stage. One memorable moment came when she pretended to cry before quickly returning to the set. The rest of the band matched that intensity, delivering a tight performance that showcased their chemistry and skill as musicians.
Even without being familiar with every song in the set, it was easy to see the connection between the band and their fans. The crowd responded enthusiastically throughout the performance, singing along and keeping the energy high from start to finish.
From a photography perspective, the show offered no shortage of opportunities to capture memorable moments. Between the dramatic lighting, constant movement on stage, and fans waving Ukrainian flags throughout the venue, there was always something happening in front of the lens.
By the end of the night, my expectations of what a metal show could be had completely changed. Between the band’s performance, the energy of the crowd, and the atmosphere inside the sold-out venue, Jinjer delivered an unforgettable first metal show experience.
