Brooklyn-based indie-folk band, Big Thief brought their Somersault Slide 360 fall tour to Phoenix at the iconic Arizona Financial Theatre.
The venue welcomed close to 5,000 Big Thief fans on September 17th for one incredible and inspiring night. Big Thief is commonly known as a quintessential indie-folk group and have been releasing music and developing their unique sound since 2016.
The trio consists of Adrianne Lenker on lead vocals/guitar, Buck Meek on lead guitars/back-up vocals, and James Krivchenia on the drums. Lenker’s songwriting style is both honest and vulnerable, which is a core strength of the group’s sound and overall dynamic. Sonically, Big Thief utilizes the more real and raw folk guitar riffs and off-kilter style of drumming that serve as key contributors to their distinctive sound.
The depth of pain and emotion present within the majority of Big Thief’s tracks contributes to their live show presence. The band’s energy and passion for their craft were evident within their performance. Not only that, but their appreciation for the fans and their excitement speak volumes. I felt as though I was able to experience the set from the photo pit through the fans’ eyes.
The emotion and vulnerability were so strong it was impossible not to feel it yourself. The entire venue, from the front of the barricade all the way back to the nosebleeds, was hooked, and it was truly such a special type of energy to be a part of.
Big Thief are wrapping up their final leg of the Somersault Slide 360 Tour in the next couple of weeks. They have quite a few shows left, from California to the tour closer in Utah on October 7th.
